What is Asbestos?

It’s not every day that someone has to worry about asbestos abatement in their Massachusetts home, but it does happen. As a company that has been helping remove asbestos safely from homes for over 25 years, one of the biggest questions Atlantic Bay Contracting receives about the removal is, “What is asbestos?”

Asbestos is a group of minerals that have microscopic fibers which are resistant to heat, fire, and a majority of chemicals. It even is not conductive to electricity, which is why many in industries like automotive and construction used this mineral on their job sites and products. Once found in many every day products, asbestos was praised and utilized every way that it could be, that was until it was linked to serious health conditions through a series of studies.

When asbestos is disturbed, the fine fibers that it is made of become airborne, and then can be inhaled. After being breathed in, they become trapped in a person’s lungs. An accumulation of these fibers in someone’s system can lead to a variety of health problems, including mesothelioma, a cancer that impacts the lining of the lungs, chest cavity, and/or abdomen. It has also been linked to lung cancer and other lung-related problems.

Asbestos is often associated with older homes, and many homeowners believe they would not have it in their home for that reason alone. What many do not know is that it was only in 1977 when asbestos was becoming limited and 1989 when it was officially banned. This means that there are millions of homeowners that don’t even know asbestos exists in their home.

Luckily, there are asbestos removal services in Massachusetts that can help safely remove this mineral from your home and give you the peace of mind you have been looking for.
