Recent Asbestos Scare in Downtown Boston

During mid-November, crews were put to work on the streets of Boston as asbestos ran rampant. According to several Boston news sources, first responders arrived on the scene after responding to a water main leak on Summer Street around 5:30 am. Shortly after, authorities were informed of a steam issue due to a burst pipe erupting from a manhole cover on the same road.

After securing the area and the source of the steam, it was determined that asbestos-containing material was detected in some of the debris within the area. Debris settled on roads, shop windows, and a car parked along the street. Qualified Boston asbestos abatement teams were brought in to properly address the situation and make the area safe for the public.

One of the many areas of concern was the air. Crews then tested air samples to ensure there was no impact on the air quality. The cause of the leak and where the asbestos came from are still under investigation.

The team at Atlantic Bay Contracting feels it important to share this information with our clients as it shows the importance of empowering yourself with asbestos awareness. Many people are misled and believe that this dangerous fiber is no longer a threat, but as you can see, it is. Below is a brief list of the most common places one may encounter asbestos:

  • Sprayed ceilings or walls
  • Water tanks
  • Loose insulation
  • Ducts
  • Ceiling tiles
  • Floor tiles
  • Panels in fire doors
  • Cement roofs
  • Roof shingles and flashing
  • Industrial and commercial columns and beams

Although several people share their environments with asbestos each day, they may be unaware of the hidden threat. And, that’s okay so long as the fibers remain undisturbed. It is when this disruption occurs that the fibers are released into the air putting anyone in their path at risk for serious health complications. Now, don’t get us wrong and think we’re saying that unbothered asbestos is safe, as it is quite the opposite.
